The Pod Life.
My CHU (Containerized Housing Unit) room that I live in here in Iraq is 13’6 “ x 8’8”. I know because I measured it. I measured every piece of furniture in the room as well, so as to optimize the lay out. I’m crazy like that.
See, during my first 90 day rotation here, it was all I could do to survive day-to-day. Learning a new job, navigating a new place, and discovering all the quirks and misadventures that can happen in The Pod Life. And believe me when I tell you, if there is a mishap possible, it will happen to me. I am the queen of catastrophe, or as I like to call it, “Murphy’s Law”. Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.
After my first R&R break, I returned for my second rotation ready to take on the world and settle into this pod life with both feet; barefoot and sunk into the sand (figuratively, not literally, because Lord knows what creepy crawlers inhabit the sand here). During my first rotation I had picked up a carpet at the PX because the floor is linoleum and I prefer softness under my feet when I get out of bed (see previous post about “creature comforts”). At the time I had a grey quilt on the bed and I had found a 6’ x 4’ grey carpet with turquoise diamonds. It was a great find because most of the carpets they sell at the PX are a solid drab color such as brown, tan, or beige.
After much deliberation, and looking at how other people had their rooms set up, I decided to rearrange the furniture layout (with the help of some crew chiefs). In the process, I decided it would be great to cover most, if not all of the floor with carpet. Of course, it would have to all match. So, back to the PX I went, where I was able to get a second one to match the first, as well as a smaller (2’ x 4’) matching one. Great. Now with the measurements of the room, if I put carpets side by side on the long side I would end up covering enough of the floor to make it (almost) like wall to wall. But I need a third one to ultimately end up with a 6’ x 12’ coverage. Back to the PX again. Lots of carpets but nothing with that pattern.
Ok, no sweat, I’m a patient person (or at least I have learned to be working here). I check back the following week; still no carpet. Another week goes by; no carpet. I took a picture of the carpet in my room and showed it to every worker at the PX, every time I went in, and asked them when they are getting a new shipment. Still no luck. I didn’t give up, and continued to go (and show the picture) every week to no avail. Finally I was due to go on break again, and was relieved of the angst of the carpet that would never be. At least for the next 30 days.
After a few days of settling back in after returning from my second break, I made my way to the PX for supplies (as is customary). I had pretty much given up on the carpet and frankly, it was the furthest thing from my mind at the time. Shampoo, conditioner, and deodorant were much higher priorities. When I walked in, one of the workers saw me, got all wide eyed, and hurried over to me. “Ma’am, ma’am, we have (something undiscernible in a Philippine accent) for you!!” I said ok, and waited with a puzzled look on my face while he ran to the back room. Holy crap! He walked out with none other than my 3rd matching carpet. I had bugged the shit out of them and showed them pictures so much that when they got it in, they set it aside just for me. Wicked cool. Being a pain in the ass can sometimes pay off.
